  Making a Beat

"...the MPC4000, which after the microwave is probably THE sickest invention in the entire world....f*ckin' heavy."

I'm fascinated by the seemingly endless appeal of "beats," as well as the growing predominance of beatmakers in music production. Ponder this: in a few years, "Beats:101" will be standard music-degree fare; that is to say, academic institutions will teach (i.e., perpetuate) a body of knowledge derived from a culture almost completely devoid of "academic" music theory. Put another way, a group of artists without any substantial musical training were able to become culturally and musically important to such a degree their art warrants study and absorption into the canon of music theory.

Fascinating.
