Samsung DLP washout, aka "the greens"

You're looking at some kind of digital washout that is occurring on my friend's Samsung DLP television. Every so often, the darkest areas of a picture are replaced with a solid green. Initially, the problem occurred with some spontaneity, eventually becoming the TV's permanent operating state. A Samsung field tech replaced the PCB(?) card, but the problem has resurfaced.

We don't know exactly what to call the phenomenon: washout, flooding, saturation...for a digital environment, who knows what the TV's doing.

If you've got any insight into what this symptom is, drop a note in the photo's comments on Flickr!.
