  .tel TLD for VOIP/POTS

PhonopolyTranslation:
.tel = a new web address system exclusively for communication.
TLD = Top Level Domain (the three letter endings in web URL's, .com, .edu .gov, etc)
VOIP = Voice Over IP
POTS = Plain Old Telephone System

A photo from February of this year. I'm slowly eliminating redundant communication devices/systems from my life...trying to simplify the maintenance of business and personal relationships.

From ICANN's proposal:

"The .Tel is a text-based naming and navigation sTLD that addresses the unique needs of the fixed-line and wireless Internet-Communications namespace. This namespace covers any form of intercommunications activity (voice, combined voice/data, or messaging) between individuals and/or businesses, which is dependent, in part or whole, on the Internet as the means of transport. Hereinafter, this environment is referred to as the "Internet-Communications namespace."

The example ICANN is frequently employing (although it's apparently not significant in any way) is a customer using Hertz's website can click an icon and be instantly connected to a live operator regardless of what communication system (telephone, VOIP, Skype, AIM, Yahoo! IM, etc). In concert with systems like Verizon's Wireless Broadband, you could concievably route any .tel traffic to your preferred hardware device. I think this opens up HUGE possibilities for vendors and companies to innovate (and profit) in the communications space. Not just telco players and newbies like the Bell's and Skype, but services like eBay (connecting prospective buyers/sellers with one-click voice) or Craigslist Casual Encounters.
