  Oboe

MP3.com founder (and fan) Michael Robertson announced the launch of his new music storage venture, Oboe (aka mp3tunes). Founded on the same principle that brought the wrath (and eventual absorption) of the media conglomerates to mp3.com (and MyPlay), Oboe an online storage service tailored for music files.

As with mp3.com, Lindows (ahem, "Linspire") and now Oboe, Robertson has an established history of challenging the basics of behemoth business models.

The idea is somewhat sound (pun intended) - offering a paid storage service. While it's currently tailored for music files, I think the real value is in offering an internet based archiving/backup service. I think, unfortunately, Google is probably going to eat them alive in this space, as I can already store a couple of gigs of stuff under multiple gmail accounts. This has the same net effect as mp3tunes and is free to boot.

The service is competing with portable storage devices, ala USB thumbdrives and multigigabyte handhelds. The service also runs into infrastructure barriers that don't exist with physical media, ala phone lines. Mp3tunes is *great* if you're on your friend's college DSx line, but will blow horribly if you've only got access to dialup. Additionally, if you're travelling, you're most likely going to rely on paid access from a hotel, in essence you have to pay again for access to your data.

There may be, however, a niche user this service is appropriate for. For someone with a small-capacity playback device and no other means of music library storage (a work-assigned laptop, for instance) may enjoy having a means of accessing their entire library of music from anywhere.
