Things that are cool.

  Jr Gong.

I have a healthy distrust for major labels pushing the children of music luminaries (see: Jakob Dylan (The Wallflowers), son of Bob Dylan), so it was with some trepidation I received the latest Damian "Jr Gong" Marley album. (read Canada's National Post interview with Marley here.) Having now listened to the album, I feel compelled to report this is one of the best collections to come out in some time.

The lead single at the moment, "Welcome to Jamrock" has become a staple of my mp3 player in the last month. (As an aside, one of the things about this track that fascinates me is how many white guys are bumpin' it in their cars...) Interested readers can check out Marley's website and listen to "Jamrock" and a couple of other singles.

I'll confess to having to listen over twenty times to hear all the words in this song, but it's been a pleasurable listen and my ears continually grow fonder of the simple beat, bassline, and attitude of the song.

I predict the usual crop of me-too tracks will be emerging from suburban white-guy bands/artists very, very soon. Eminem will have a reggae "hit" plunged into the ClearChannel sewer system, as will white actress-cum-divas (Lohan, Simpson, et al) struggling for street cred.
